…set to draw high-profile casesThe judicial backlog is slated to see a reduction as the October Criminal Assizes opened at the Demerara High Court on Tuesday with traditional horsemen and marching policemen. It is expected that several high-profile cases currently before the court could come up for hearing.Acting Chief Justice Roxane George, the High Court’s most senior judge, was onActing Chief Justice Roxane George, SC, in the process of inspecting the guard of honour at the South Road entrance of the High Court in Georgetown (Adam Baksh photo)hand to take the salute and to inspect the guard of honour at the final opening of the Demerara Criminal Assizes for 2018. Justice Sandil Kissoon is sitting once again in the Demerara High Court, while Justices Jo-Ann Barlow and James Bovell-Drakes have been also placed at the October session.Several high-profile matters are pending, including the case of former Bishops’ High School teacher Coen Jackson and popular transgender personality Otis “Otisha” Pearson who were separately committed to stand trial for separate charges of sexual activity with a child under 16. In the case of Jackson, the Virtual Complainant is female while Pearson’s accuser is male.Another pending case relates to that of La Parfaite Harmonie pastor Joseph Persaud, who was accused of allegedly raping one of his female church members. High-profile death row inmate for the 2008 Bartica massacre, Mark Royden Williams, called Smallie, also has to be tried for his alleged involvement in the murder of Kumar Singh, known as “Mango Man”, who met his demise in August 2007.It was reported that four gunmen terrorised his Craig Milne, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home and shot at the man and nine other family members. This case was scheduled to be heard at previous sessions, but was frequently delayed owing to pre-trial matters.
Parents and staff at Buncrana’s Colaiste Chineal Eoghain are reeling this morning with the news that the school may close.A decision is to be made on the future of the secondary school by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn. The school opened in 2007 and caters for pupils who wish to get taught in the Irish language. Local Buncrana Town Councillor Ciaran McLaughlin said the education authorities including Donegal VEC have not given the school enough of a chance. The school has struggled to attract the numbers needed to keep it open in recent years. The Department said the school needed to attract 25 first years pupils this September but just 17 have so far enrolled.Cllr McLaughlin said: “I feel the Minister and the VEC could and should have given this college more time and the VEC in my opinion have not promoted and supported the Gaelcholaiste and they have let them down on this occasion.” Cllr McLaughlin said the school was given three choices – merge with Crana College, join Colaiste Ailigh in Letterkenny or be phased out.He said he fears the latter option may be taken and said it was a very black day for the Irish language in Co Donegal.Parents have until April 26th to make a decision on the matter. He stressed that parents at the school were fighting “tooth and nail” to keep the school open. If Mars had oceans or lakes, it wasn’t for long, at least in the Syrtis Major region. Results of observations of the thermal emission imaging system (THEMIS) aboard the 2001 Mars Odyssey reveal about four times as much olivine as previously recognized in the Nili Fossae adjacent to the Syrtis volcanic shield. Olivine quickly degrades in the presence of water. Philip R. Christensen, principal investigator, who published the results in the June issue of Geology,1 believes eruptive volcanoes were the primary source of the olivine-rich basalts, not intrusive processes like dikes or sills. The report on Mars Daily says the area studied is 11 times larger than the big island of Hawaii. Co-author Victoria Hamilton said that finding this much olivine in a “very old region of Mars” was intriguing, and suggests that this area of Mars, at least, “has not seen much water.” Nevertheless, other areas look like something flowed. Mars Express released an image of Ares Valles (near where the Mars Pathfinder rover landed) that looks like an extensive flood plain. Perhaps volcanic heat melted frozen groundwater for a brief flooding episode some time long ago.Update 06/06/2005: [email protected] reported that this could explain the methane. Rather than coming from living organisms, the methane could emerge from the olivine in a process called serpentinization. Chris Oze (Dartmouth) said, “I’d love to see bugs, but you can’t just go on hope. You have to consider the geological options.” Apparently, it would not require that much olivine to do the job, and now there’s probably more around than first expected.1Hamilton and Christensen, “Evidence for extensive, olivine-rich bedrock on Mars,” Geology, Vol. 33, No. 6, pp. 433436, doi: 10.1130/G21258.1.Even if Mars had lots of water, and even if its atmosphere was able to shield out the harmful radiation reaching the surface, it would not necessarily have had life. This just erodes the hopes of astrobiologists even further. About the only lively thing going on is the occasional dust devil passing by (see movie taken by Spirit).(Visited 7 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
Ah, the year-in-review, that ritual where we tout the best and worst of what’s happened over the last 12 months. For its part, the Chinese government’s year-end review chronicled the usual sorts of governmental achievements, but a notable success this year, according to officials, is the amount of illegal and “objectionable” content that the country has eliminated: “By November, 350 million pieces of harmful information, including text, pictures and videos, had been deleted,” according to Wang Chen, deputy head of China’s propaganda department. “There was a notable improvement in the online cultural environment.” Wang says that the government checked 1.79 million websites in its efforts to eradicate objectionable content, and more than 60,000 porn websites were shuttered. Of the almost 5,000 people suspected of spreading pornographic content, 1,332 people received “criminal punishment” with 58 jailed for five years or more.Of course, “obscenity” has a rather broad definition in China, and these government figures don’t include content already blocked in the first place. China keeps tight control over what Internet users can access via an extensive system of filtering and blocking – the Great Firewall, as its often called. Blocked sites include Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.Wang said in a press conference that he had heard that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was vacationing in China, but said that Zuckerberg had not met with anyone from his department. “We saw reports that he met with some well-known figures in China’s Internet industry,” said Wang. “We are also still trying to learn more about his visit to China.”There are an estimated 450 million Internet users in China, a larger online population than any other country. But as these censorship numbers – along with Google’s history in China – indicate, entry into the Chinese market is difficult. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… mike melanson 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The Smart Living Room is taking that predictive ability and adding it to television viewing. Here’s the explanation from the announcement:After a viewer answers a series of Hunch personality questions, The Smart Living Room creates a personalized movie recommendation including the genre best suited for that viewer as well as movie title suggestions. The viewer can then create a movie watching event by inviting friends and family through Facebook or email. The site utilizes dynamic CG animations to offer the viewer entertainment and surprises throughout the experience. If Hunch can bring it’s often appallingly accurate predictions to content recommendation, Samsung could have a winner on its hands. Unfortunately, all the site currently recommends is a basic genre, like “Action” or “Comedy”, a pretty 3D animation and a couple title recommendations. With a prediction engine like Hunch, we’re hoping to see more from this in the near future. Related Posts One of the big reasons Netflix is so successful isn’t just that it’s cheap and available over the Internet. The service keeps track of what you watch, takes into account your ratings of different content, and then makes suggestions for what else to see according to all of that data. The accuracy of those predictions likely determine your opinion of the service itself. Today Hunch has partnered up with Samsung and Digitas to launch The Smart Living Room, an “interactive microsite that makes movie watching a deeper social experience.”If you’ve never played with Hunch before, know one thing – it’s eerily creepy. If you have some delusion about being a unique snowflake of a person, you can quickly dispel that illusion by using its Twitter predictor game for a little while. Suddenly, you want to ask it if it could have a magician’s assistant write down the answer on a separate sheet, take it out of the room and come back after you answered just to prove it isn’t making it all up. That’s about how accurate Hunch can be. A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#Internet TV#news#web
In science, when you do an experiment A invariably leads to B. When you repeat this experiment, you can be certain that A will result in B. This is how science works.Selling is a complex, dynamic human interaction. Complex, dynamic human interactions are not science. The variables are so great that there is no way to ensure that A results in B every time. There may be propensity for A to result in B, and much of your experience may point to this being true. But that is not science. In sales A sometimes equals B. Other times in sales, A equals C. Other times A equals D. Where you get into trouble is believing that A always equals B.When different results are possible, the person selecting the choice of action needs to be aware of and thoughtful about making the right choice. This means you must get beyond the belief that there is a single choice, because a single choice is no choice at all. It’s a decision.Mixed martial arts started with the UFC. When it first began, it was based on the idea that one person in one form of fighting would compete against a person who studied a different form. This would have a boxer in competition with a wrestler. Or you would have a Brazilian jujitsu master fight a kickboxer. That lasted for about a decade until everyone learned to grapple.Once everyone was dangerous on the ground, the combatants decided to stand back up. Now they know Brazilian jujitsu, Muay Thai boxing, traditional boxing, and probably judo. They no longer have undying commitments to a single art, because a single art no longer serves them. They want competency in as many disciplines as possible. And this is exactly how you should think about sales. You should not be slavishly devoted to any single idea or discipline, knowing that real power and effectiveness comes from knowing what choices are available, and making the right choice in the moment of truth. Justice Robert Schuster today determined that after having reviewed all evidence, in the police sufficiency hearing there was simply not enough condemning material to move the manslaughter case forward against the two men.Mark Fulford of F Chambers Law firm reported to Magnetic Media that he “argued before Justice Schuster, that the DPP Jillian Williams did not have enough evidence to convict their clients of the manslaughter of Julliot Pierre.”Julliot Pierre, who was 24 year old at the time of his death in July 2017, is better known by his nickname, Haitian Fresh and was chopped with a cutlass during a fight, hospitalized and he later passed away. Originally, his death was classified as ‘unexplained’. The autopsy report later confirmed that the injuries in that fight did cause Pierre’s death and the investigation became a homicide probe. It is widely believed the real killer got away.Magnetic Media is told that the suspected man, who police were hunting for the killing hopped a flight to Haiti and never returned to Provo. In July last year TCI Police were reported as looking for Richard ‘Rich Boi’ Gail in connection to the murder of the Kew Town man. One comment shared with Magnetic Media following today’s outcome said, “Police should have never wasted their time and the people’s resources to charge Clayton Morris and Jermaine Fulford Jr. in the killing of ‘Haitian Fresh’…. The DPP knew quite well the Police had nothing in the bundle against those two by themselves but a much stronger case against the individual that fled the country… Police put out a wanted poster for Richard Gail but it was too late… It is sad that this poor Haitian boy’s life was taken away from him… one cannot rejoice in the victorious results of the sufficiency hearing today… as a young man’s life was cut short.”Photo: Julliot ‘Haitian Fresh’ Pierre, 24 Former PNP Election candidate and businessman calls for swifter reconstruction for Capital, Grand Turk TCI: Three airlifted with gunshot from Provo to Jamaica; attorney activist says try his crime prevention plan
