Share LocalNews Discover Dominica Authority News Update for the week ending Friday November 11th, 2011 by: – November 11, 2011center_img Tweet Share **Discover Dominica Authority hosts Nature Film Crew** Dominica will be featured in the French version of the “Guardians of Nature” documentary in 2012. A two member film crew will be in Dominica from November 6 – 17, 2011 to cover various aspects of the country’s natural beauty and wildlife for the television documentary. The crew will work closely with officers of the Forestry, Wildlife and National Parks Division, and the Dominica Sea Turtle Conversation Association. Some of the main elements to be featured in the documentary are the Sisserou and Jaco parrots, Mountain Chicken, Forests and Sea Turtles. The 50 – minutes show is broadcast on over 20 television stations worldwide including Guadeloupe and on Air France with over 2 million viewers.**Two students receive awards at National Youth Rally**Two Dominican students received awards for excellence in tourism competitions at the National Youth Rally on November 2nd. Medina Tyson, a student of the North East Comprehensive School received an award for obtaining the 2nd place position in the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association Children’s Essay Competition. Ms. Tyson’s participated in the senior division of the essay contest and the title of her essay was “What Does Sustainable Tourism Mean To Your Destination?” Kitwanie Carbon, a Convent High School student received an award for her performance at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Tourism Youth Congress held in St. St. Martin on September 17th 2011. Miss Carbon became Dominica’s Junior Minister of Tourism when she won the local Tourism Youth Congress held during Tourism Awareness Month 2011. The awards were presented by Honourable Ian Douglas, Minister for Tourism and Legal Affairs. **WT Media Award**Dominica captured 2 awards at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) “Host & Reward the Media” ceremony on November 7th. DDA hosted 2 press trips earlier this year with the journalists producing articles on their trips in Dominica. The awards were – Best Consumer Feature in Wanderlust Magazine by journalist Mark Stratton entitled ‘Green for Go’ and the award for – Best National Newspaper Feature in the Daily Telegraph by Uzu Bennett entitled ‘How I Hiked up & down Dominica and Survived’Congrats to Dominica!**Dominica Participates in the World Travel Market (WTM) in London**The Discover Dominica Authority participated at the World Travel Market in London this week. World Travel Market is the leading global event for the travel industry. It is a vibrant must attend Four-day business-to-business event presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to the UK and international travel professionals. The DDA is looking to take advantage of this opportunity to meet with the global travel trade, network, negotiate and conduct business. Mr. Colin Piper, Director of Tourism reported that the DDA is hoping to efficiently, effectively and productively gain immediate competitive advantage for Dominica and to stay abreast with the latest developments in the travel industry. This is a unique opportunity to meet vital buyer contacts, seal deals and boost profits.” The Dominica contingent consist of representatives from the DDA, Dominica Tours, Jungle Bay Resort & Spa and Cocoa Cottages along with Dominican UK representatives, The Saltmarsh Partnership.**DDA and the Ministry of Tourism Clean Up and Beautification Programme**Under the “Clean Up and Beautification” programme, the Ministry of Tourism and DDA Officials along with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Division embarked on a clean-up campaign in Kingshill. The Kingshill Development Committee and the Kingshill Youth for Change formed part of the activities to help keep the community beautiful and to motivate residents to preserve and protect the environment. The program involved painting, cleaning of the area and tree planting in the community. The Morne Bruce area was the highlight of the activities as this area is also a major tourist attraction.
