Africa’s growth ‘has to be inclusive’

first_img10 May 2012While Africa has experienced its best decade of the past 50 years, there are major challenges still to be tackled, African Development Bank Tunisia president Donald Kaberuka said at the opening of the World Economic Forum on Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Thursday.“We should not confuse economic growth with economic transformation,” Kaberuka said, noting that the structure of African economies had not changed fast enough and that countries remained vulnerable to external shocks.Public policy choices should target ways to leverage wealth from natural resources for broad-based, sustainable growth, Kaberuka said, identifying two key drivers for the future: the education of children of the poor as a tool to address generational change, and the development of small and medium enterprises to close the wealth gap.Over 700 participants from more than 70 countries are taking part in the three-day WEF on Africa, the first to be held in Ethiopia.Time for Africans ‘to take ownership’Monhla Hlahla, chairperson of South Africa’s Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), told the plenary that it was time for Africans themselves to occupy centre stage on the continent and to take ownership of their lives and production.African farmers were now in a position “not only to produce coffee beans but also to taste the coffee”, Hlahla said, but added that strong and decisive leadership was required to keep African development on track. She said the future of the contintent called for leaders that were predictable and consistent, and that were able to move Africa up the value chain. No growth ‘if millions are left behind’Kofi Annan, chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and the Africa Progress Panel, Switzerland, emphasized the need to empower young people and to strengthen health and education to ensure that Africa reaped a “demographic dividend” over the next decade.Annan told delegates that African government policies needed to create equal access to opportunities to avoid dissatisfaction in the future. “We cannot talk of growth when millions of people are left behind,” Annan said.A lack of consensus and vision had led to a situation where each new government in Africa had a tendency to start afresh instead of building on the achievements of its predecessor, Annan said.It was therefore important for more debate to take place to reach consensus on the direction countries needed to take.Bekele Geleta, secretary-general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, told the plenary that it was important for Africans to feel that they had a stake in their countries’ wealth, and that there was free and fair opportunity for everyone.Geleta said the mindset within Africa was changing, with Africans increasingly wanting to shape their own lives and actively engage in their future.Mood of ‘pragmatic optimism’Gao Xiqing, president of the China Investment Corporation, said Africa was in the position of being able to create a new template for its future. However, Xiqing said it was important for African countries to ensure that their growth was as inclusive as possible. In this, he said, Africa could learn from China, which had prioritized growth over development and was now facing challenges such as huge wealth inequality and environmental problems.World Economic Forum chairman Klaus Schwab told delegates that the mood in Africa today was quite different from what it was 22 years ago, having moved from one of cynicism through scepticism and then realism to today’s atmosphere of “pragmatic optimism”.Doug McMillon, chief executive of US retail giant Wal-Mart, told the plenary that, while its $2.4-billion investment in Africa – through the acquisition of South African retailer Massmart – the company was excited by the numbers it looked at before making the decision to invest.“There are a lot of things to be optimistic about in the region,” McMillon said.SAinfo reporter and World Economic Forumlast_img read more

Use plot data to make good decisions

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest As harvest continues across the Eastern Corn Belt, seed companies, universities, and growers will have the chance to compile and analyze data from yield testing. One of the most important decisions a farmer will face all year is deciding what variety to plant and in which field to plant it. To ensure that the best possible decision is made next spring, it is critical to spend some time looking at yield data. While reviewing data is critical, knowing how to determine whether it is accurate and useful is equally important. Below are some tips for using data to make sound planting decisions next spring.Look for replicated dataDon’t rely on yield results from one strip plot on a farm or from a single plot location. Look for data from randomized tests that are repeated multiple times and across multiple locations. Replications in testing increase the reliability of the data. For strip plot data, was a “tester” used?Strip plots planted on farms can cover large areas of a field. In many fields in the Eastern Corn Belt there are several soil types. If a plot crosses several soil types how can you be sure it is accurate? By planting a “tester” variety between each entry in the plot, you can calculate adjusted yields based on the variability of the tester yield across the plot. This ensures more accurate data.Look for consistencyAccording to Bob Nielsen, Purdue Extension Agronomist, “Documented consistency in yield performance is still the key to success in selecting hybrids that will perform well in your farming operation.” When choosing a variety based on plot data, it is important to look for consistent performance — across several plot locations and between multiple years. Choose varieties that consistently performed well across multiple years, in several locations, and different growing conditions.Statistical significanceOn published plot data look for foot notes that indicate the least statistically significant yield difference, or LSD. In many plots, the performance of the top five or 10 varieties may not be statistically different. Although there are small differences in yield, statistical analysis of the data indicates that all varieties within the LSD have an equal chance of winning the plot. While plot data can be very useful in making decisions, some plot data is significantly more accurate and reliable. The key to getting the most out of yield data is having the ability to sort through the large amounts of information to identify the data that most accurately and reliably represents crop performance.last_img read more

NAB 2018: Fujifilm’s X-H1 Camera Gets Put to the Test

first_imgAt NAB this year, the industry is finally getting its hands on Fujifilm’s new 4K mirrorless x-H1 camera. Here’s what we’ve learned so far.Top image via Fujifilm. So, the X-H1 isn’t news — this camera was announced earlier this year. However, people are finally starting to get their hands on it at NAB. Much like 2016’s X-T2, Fujifilm’s new mirrorless camera offers a little more than its predecessor — but not much. The sensor is still the same, and most of the still photography settings are the same. The body is a bit “more sturdy.” The camera is also the first in the X-series lineup with 5-axis in-body stabilization, as well as a new flicker reduction mode, making indoor photography (specifically sports photography) easier for new shooters. This new bulky body is necessary to accommodate bigger lenses. This is Fuji listening to their users and trying to build a smoother, more comfortable camera. NoFilmSchool got their hands on the camera at NAB, so let’s take a look at how the test played out.(Note: The X-T2 is featured in the thumbnail, but it’s not about the X-T2. Just click it.)The real kicker with this camera is the ETERNA mode that essentially emulates film stock, bringing out the colors in a way that reduces the need for extensive color grading in post-production.The FUJIFILM X-H1 features the “ETERNA” mode, a new Film Simulation mode suitable for video recording, simulating the output of cinematographic films. Characterized by subdued color presentations and rich shadow tones, this mode can be used at 400% Dynamic Range (equivalent to approximately 12 stops) to attain video recording with a high degree of perfection while substantially reducing color-grading workload in post processing.Fujifilm has released a short film captured using the X-H1 and the ETERNA feature. You be the judge. They’ve also included a series on photographers and filmmakers who have gotten their hands on the camera to shoot various styles of art and culture. Each artist has a video or profile on their thoughts here. So, my personal thoughts . . . what’s the point? The differences between the X-H1 and the X-T2 are so minimal, I don’t think it justifies an entirely new camera. But that’s just me.Here are the specs:Sensor: 23.6mm x 15.6mm(APS-C)X-Trans CMOS IIIX-mountF-log120 fps at 1080pWeight: 507g5-axis in-body stabilizationTouchscreenFilm Simulator ETERNA15 minutes recording timeDCI 4K Looking for more NAB coverage? Your Before and After Picture

first_imgI am riffing on this idea that my friend Chris wrote about. He said that no one cares about your “before” picture unless you also have an “after” picture. Some time ago I wrote about a friend of mine who gave a speech in which she did just that and how she left all of us in pain. She was really writing the middle chapter, not the final chapter. But the story she told made it feel like the final chapter (even though it was one heck of a great and moving speech). But this idea has legs, and it’s too valuable to leave lie.BeforeRight now, take a picture. Take a picture of your results in sales or in business. Take a picture of a relationship you are working on. Take a picture of yourself. Take a snapshot of your financial picture. Each of these, and anything else you might want to add, are your before pictures. And AfterYou can’t take an after picture unless you have a before picture with which you can compare it. A year from now, you can take another picture. What will you have changed during the time between pictures? And In-betweenYou see, everybody wants to take the after picture, but too few want to do the transformational work that makes the after picture worth taking. What beliefs are you willing to change to dramatically change your before and after pictures? What new actions are going to produce those results? What is going to drive you to carve away all the pieces that aren’t the very best version of you the world has ever known? The things that you resist the most are the things you most need to do. And this is why most people never have the after picture they dream of. Essential Reading! Krishna Setty, Administrator, he Lalit Kala Akademi said, “Over the years, the practice of printmaking is decreasing among artists. As a result, many printmakers are taking refuge in other mediums for their survival. To arrest this situation, we need to boost this medium with international exposure. Moreover, with the advancement of new technologies, this medium has taken new dimensions all over the world, which needs to be showcased to the art fraternity and connoisseurs.” The biennale will be organized in collaboration with National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). Speaking of the same, Adwaita Gadanayak, DG, NGMA, said, “The museum has international facilities which will be given to the Akademi to present their best foot forward for this international endeavour. It is imperative for more and more organisations to come together and create an atmosphere of art creation and growth.”The first selection will be made based on the digital entries sent by the artists. If the work gets approved by the jury, it will be displayed during the exhibition. Later in the second round, selected artists will be asked to send their original work so that it gets easier to choose the winners. Paula Sengupta, a printmaker and teacher, mentioned that printmaking is over four centuries old and is a culmination of many years of practice.
