Pulling Piri Weepu bottle-feeding an ‘anti-father sentiment’

first_imgTVNZ 7 Feb 2012The row over a health campaign which cut out images of All Black star Piri Weepu bottle-feeding his baby shows no sign of dying down. The two-second shot of Weepu feeding his daughter Taylor with a bottle in the Health Sponsorship Council TV smoke free ad was removed after there was an outcry from pro-breastfeeding advocates. The makers of the advert sent it to Plunket, the New Zealand College of Midwives and La Letche League and when all disapproved of the ad the shot was cut. The organisations were concerned Weepu’s high profile carried weight and would sway people away from breastfeeding their children. GP and lactation consultant Yvonne Le Fort told TV ONE’s Breakfast this was an anti-smoking campaign advert but it does contradict other campaigns. “These images of a very well known icon in our country could be damaging to the breastfeeding promotion.” However, Weepu has hit back, saying that his baby is allergic to dairy. And Family First’s Bob McCoskrie told Breakfast he is pro breastfeeding, but pulling the image is an “anti-father sentiment”.”What these groups are doing is shutting down any image of a father feeding a child and I think that’s a great image that we need to have a TV, at the same time as saying breast is best,” he said. “Look Piri is a man he can’t breastfeed, second it could be expressed milk.”http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/pulling-piri-weepu-bottle-feeding-anti-father-sentiment-4713104last_img read more
