Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Dr. Charles Hatcher, the Tennessee State Veterinarian, was at the center of the recent flurry of activity with avian influenza when the H7 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was discovered in a commercial facility in the state.“The state of Tennessee benefitted from the previous states going through the outbreak in 2015. The lessons learned there were critical for what we did,” Hatcher said at yesterday’s National Institute for Animal Agriculture meeting in Columbus. “We knew there was a possibility of this happening because the Mississippi Flyway and the Atlantic Coastal Flyway touch Tennessee. Since 2015 we have been planning. The bombshell hit us and once we determined it was HPAI, our pre-determined plans went into place. We had the incident command structure just like you would have going into war. It is like fighting a war because you have all of these battles.”The Tennessee Department of Agriculture announced the discovery of HPAI in early March. A few days later, another Tennessee poultry farm tested positive for a different low pathogenic strain of avian influenza through routine testing. Soon after, Alabama and Kentucky found low path cases as well. The first key with the HPAI is to contain the area and depopulate.“We acted quickly. The key with HPAI is to depopulate the birds as quickly as you can. We had it done in less than 24 hours. We established a control zone and we only had one other commercial location that broke with it and it was relatively close,” Hatcher said. “In our situation we think it was a showering of the virus from migratory waterfowl and we had multifocal introductions. In a matter of 10 days we had two high path cases and one low path. The two high path locations were the only ones that spread laterally. All of the others locations had no connections.”Biosecurity is the best defense and is particularly important in Ohio during migratory season in the Eastern Mississippi Flyway from early March through late May or early June.“Nothing can really prepare you for this but we were reasonably ready. We are nearing the end of this, I hope. The weather is warming up and we have gone through all of our procedures. After another week or 10 days we hope to be wrapping up the hard part of it,” Hatcher said. “The No. 1 thing you need to think about is biosecurity. The months they are at risk are when migratory waterfowl are moving. You need to sit down and have a plan. You want to separate poultry from exposure to migratory waterfowl.”

WebFeed technology is growing in popularity and has the potential to dramatically change that way that users interact with their Enterprise systems. What are WebFeeds? They are (usually) XML documents that describe frequently updated data. WebFeed readers can efficiently check many WebFeed data sources and alert users when content changes and identify what content has updated. Most blogs, like this one, provide WebFeeds available via subscription. WebFeed readers scan for and quickly find which of your subscribed feeds/blogs have changed so that you don’t need to manually visit each site and check for updated entries.Webfeeds are enabled by two popular protocols: Really Simple Syndication (RSS), Atom, and sometimes even by raw XML.How can WebFeeds be useful in an enterprise environment? WebFeeds deliver content-specific streams of data directly to subscribers. Once subscribed, the user is quickly notified to updates that occur on the WebFeed. WebFeed technology is attractive because it: – is very simple to set up – provides each feed as a targeted non-polluted channel of data, and – can be set to display and update at frequent intervals.Within the enterprise, WebFeeds can be used to provide very targeted sources for publishing information. WebFeeds can act as a substitute to emails, providing a stream of topic-specific clean non-spammed discussion and information. In the world of BPM/Workflow and ECM, WebFeeds have great potential as a method to disseminate workflow notifications and task assignments to users. Some users may not spend extended periods of time within the Workflow system, and when they do need to access the system, the user usually needs to bring up the Workflow system, log into it and then locate a particular task or work item, usually after having received an email notification.Either via a standard WebFeed Reader or else a specialized web-aware widget, workflow users can get frequent updates on workflow assignments. Yahoo! widgets or Google gadgets are perfect technology tool candidates for creating small desktop widgets that can act as nonobtrusive agents that are always within view and keep users up to date on workflow activities. As an example, this CIO Insight article describes how a legal office adopted RSS feed technology with great success. Using RSS in combination with their Document Management system, attorneys at Goldman and Carr were able to create targeted document feeds for the lawyers to scan. In the past when someone had found a pertinent document, they would send an email blast to everyone — using RSS eliminated that practice and helped them clean up their email inboxes. In the Goldman and Carr study, they found that items were often missed when people had been alerted via emails or when items were simply posted somewhere on their company portal. They also found that once they started using RSS that their lawyers could tie into RSS feeds coming directly from government agencies — a information source very relevant to their business.WebFeeds have great potential for use in the Enterprise. They’re not new, but their application within the business environment has been under-utilized. As a trend, I expect to see more and more business applications picking up on their use as important components of enterprise systems.

Israeli container shipping company ZIM reaped the fruits of the market recovery and returned to the black in the third quarter of 2017 posting a net profit of USD 25.2 million. The profit was reported against a loss of USD 37.6 million booked in the corresponding quarter of 2016.“The industry is starting to stabilize after the major changes it has gone through, with the reshaping of the alliances and M&A’s activities that took place during the last years. We saw a positive trend in the industry in the last four quarters, however, market conditions remained challenging and volatile,” the company said.Higher earnings were boosted by a 19.2 percent increase in average freight rate per TEU, which stood at USD 1,058, in the quarter.Total revenues for the quarter came at USD 816.7 million, a 26.8 percent increase when compared to USD 643.9 million in Q3 2016.ZIM carried 688, 000 TEUs in Q3, 10.6 percent more than in the same quarter last year. For the nine-month period, net profit stood at USD 21.1 million, a major rebound from a net loss of USD 168.1 million in the same period of 2016. The nine-month revenues saw a 17.6 percent jump reaching USD 2,217.4 million. The average freight rate per TEU was USD 1,008, against USD 898 in the comparable period of 2016, resulting in a 12.2 percent increase.“ZIM’s encouraging Q3 results are a cause for optimism, and we hope they reflect a momentum that we can keep up in the coming quarters; however, we still face many challenges, including the uncertainty of market conditions, including freight rates & bunker prices,” Eli Glickman, ZIM President & CEO, said.“I believe we are on the right track, as we continue to outperform the industry thanks to our unrelenting focus on profitability, efficiency and a customer-orientated approach. We are currently in the process of finalizing our 2018 budget, designed at increasing the pace of our strategy implementation and embracing fresh technological initiatives, as part of our vision to offer our customers new and best-in-market services. “ Image Courtesy: ZIM
KUSI Newsroom, Posted: February 22, 2018 KUSI Newsroom San Diego Convention Center debuts new colored LED roof February 22, 2018 SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — The newest addition to the city’s nighttime skyline has been introduced at the San Diego Convention Center. The events complex last night debuted new colored LED lights that illuminate the recently renovated Sails Pavilion’s fabric roof. The lights change colors and can be seen from downtown, Coronado Bay and are particularly visible from the air, the center said.“The Sails Pavilion is our Convention Center’s most distinguishing feature,” convention center President and CEO Clifford “Rip” Rippetoe said.“After 28 years in operation, it was time to reinvest and reimagine the space. Not only were we able to conduct necessary maintenance and upgrades without interfering with our business, but we were able to add something new that will make the Convention Center truly shine.”The $377,000 lights are the same fixtures as those used at the Empire State Building. The lights represent the final upgrade at the 90,000-square-foot Sails Pavilion that recently underwent a $16.7 million renovation. Other upgrades were the new roof, a new concrete floor and a new fire-suppression system, according to the convention center.“These upgrades represent an infrastructure investment in one of the greatest economic engines that we have,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said. “This iconic Sails Pavilion is how so many people — San Diegans and visitors alike — help to identify our great city skyline.” Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter
Barnes & Noble says digital magazine publisher Zinio and M2, its print fulfillment partner, are responsible for the prices. “They’re actually the seller of record. And they’re selling the magazines through our site to our customers. So they’re setting the prices.”So, Zinio, what gives?UPDATE: See Zinio’s response below. Barnes & Noble announced this week that it will begin selling magazine subscriptions online at steep discounts to more than 1,000 print and digital titles. Print subscription prices range from as low as $5.99 (Batanga) to $299 (Adweek). Digital subscriptions range from $1.56 (24-K) to $1,372 (Jane’s Defense Weekly). Digital single issues range from $0.99 to $99.The retailer scoffed at the idea that it would be competing with discount subscription sellers. (I don’t buy it. Nor does John Harrington, the New Single Copy editor, who said “it’s not much different from a number of online subscription sources.”) But this is nothing new. What is new, from what I can tell, is that, in some cases, the site is charging more for digital subscriptions than it is for print. For instance, a year’s subscription to Men’s Health is priced at $24.95, 44 percent off its $45.00 cover price; a digital subscription to Men’s Health sells for $24.97.Even weirder: some of the digital single copies BN.com is selling are priced close to their original cover prices. Granted, back issues of print magazines are usually inflated, so it might appear to be a good deal for someone trying to extract some old feature not online anywhere. But I sure as hell wouldn’t pay retail cover price for a digital copy of something I could find in print elsewhere, even if it took a little eBay digging.
On the eve of its third-quarter earnings report, Time Inc. revealed it’s putting an aggressive focus on the fastest growing U.S. market with the introduction of Time Inc. Latino. The new division looks to leverage the company’s already-deep penetration into the Hispanic/Latino market by serving more English and Spanish language content tailored to that audience. Believe it or not, Time Inc. has a larger Hispanic/Latino audience than Univision and Telemundo combined in digital, with a reach of 18.3 million, according to 2017 comScore Multiplatform/GfK MRI Media + Fusion data. So more emphasis on this audience is intended to further strengthen the market share, which offers a lot of upside as marketing budgets are increasing to reach multicultural demos.Monique MansoFor now, the new division is rolling out with two branded verticals — People Chica and Planeta Futbol. The former will be an English-language extension of the People brand, and the latter is Spanish-language collaboration between Sports Illustrated and 90min, a company that produces soccer coverage from around the world. But more is coming in 2018, according to People en Espanol’s VP and brand sales director, Monique Manso, who is spearheading this project. While she wouldn’t reveal what other new brands or verticals are on the horizon, she did suggest that food and health and wellness are extreme areas of interest for the company. Like many of Time Inc.’s latest product launches, this strategy will look to engage with Millennials through digital- and social-native channels. Manso indicates that’s a critical component in reaching the highly coveted younger demo. “Take a look at what’s happening with the boom in the Hispanic market, which includes Millennials”, she says. “Everyone wants to speak to them, but you can’t unless you’re speaking to a multicultural market in an authentic way. You can’t be a leading media company in this country if your product doesn’t reflect the complexion of the country.”The more aggressive focus on the Hispanic/Latino market goes beyond an audience development strategy, however. Manso says that it’s also critically important for Time Inc.’s advertising partners. “The marketing community is still trying to find its way,” she says. “We’re answering the call. We are best positioned to deliver this audience. It’s a real responsibility and advantage for us.”Manso also tells Folio: that Time Inc. Latino will make use of existing talent resources from People en Espanol for the Chica brand but will also bring in new talent as well.
