Philly sports radio host blows up during argument about racism and Amy Cooper’s 911 call

first_imgA Philadelphia sports radio host threw his headset and started yelling at his producer Tuesday after a discussion about a viral social media video turned heated.Mike Missanelli of “The Mike Missanelli Show” was dead set on supporting Amy Cooper, the woman filmed in Central Park last weekend telling police a black man filming her for not following park rules was threatening her life. There was no evidence of an attack; to the contrary, the man spoke in a calm tone of voice throughout the encounter. Once video of the 911 call circulated on Twitter and Facebook, Cooper was fired from her job at Franklin Templeton due to the firm’s zero-tolerance racism policy. Oh, when Karens take a walk with their dogs off leash in the famous Bramble in NY’s Central Park, where it is clearly posted on signs that dogs MUST be leashed at all times, and someone like my brother (an avid birder) politely asks her to put her dog on the leash. pic.twitter.com/3YnzuATsDm— Melody Cooper (@melodyMcooper) May 25, 2020Missanelli, who is white, insisted Cooper had an argument in claiming she was being attacked. Producer Tyrone Johnson, who is black, and sports update anchor Natalie Egenolf disagreed.”You’re looking at it like a layperson. I’m looking at like an attorney,” Missanelli told Johnson and Egenolf at one point.Once the show went to break, Missanelli could be seen on the simulcast losing his temper.Wow!! Cerro Gordo County rural roads improving

first_imgMASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Engineer says things are improving with the county’s gravel roads. Brandon Billings says this past week presented difficulties with weather taking a toll on those roads.“We were at one point up to 30 roads that were closed. It was pretty hard to get around. The roads were getting soft enough that the equipment couldn’t drive down the road to maintain it, so we had to pull off the roads in the afternoons. Starting on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, I had the equipment go out in the mornings while it was still frozen, starting to resurfacing some of these roads to get them back to where we can use them.”While some of the roads are open, Billings says some still remain closed. “I think there’s about 15 spots that still have water on the road that are still closed at the moment, but they’re going down, it’s getting better. As roads open up, we’re fixing them up and everything getting back into better shape.”At one point last week, a travel advisory was issued by the county to completely stay off the county’s gravel roads, something Billings says was greatly appreciated by his staff. “I appreciate the public did a good job at staying off of them. There were some roads that got beat up, but it’s unavoidable with the livestock and farm industries, but it could have been a lot worse than it was.”Billings made his comments during Tuesday’s meeting of the County Board of Supervisors.last_img read more

Record-man Ronaldo puts Portugal into last 16

first_imgAt the other end, a save from Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who has made grey sweatpants the must-have fashion back home, saved a swirling Ronaldo free-kick on 29 minutes.Nani had the ball in the Hungary net five minutes from the break, but his effort was ruled offside. The Fenerbahce forward was not to be denied and his crisp finish, after a lovely pass in from Ronaldo, put Portugal level on 42 minutes. The game burst into life with four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second-half.Hungary regained the lead just two minutes after the break when Dzsudzsak’s well-struck free-kick took a slight deflection off the Portugal wall on 47 minutes. The stage was set for Ronaldo. The Real superstar made sure he would leave the Stade de Lyon with two records when he flicked his shot past Kiraly on 50 minutes to make it 2-2.But Portugal’s second equaliser only served to galvanise Hungary’s resolve.Dzsudzsak drilled a free-kick off the wall, but pounced on the rebound and his left-footed shot deflected off Nani, past Rui Patricio, into the far corner on 55 minutes for a 3-2 lead. There was, however, no denying Ronaldo.Just moments after coming on, Ricardo Queresma fired in a corner and Ronaldo drove his header past Kiraly on 62 minutes.By now it was end-to-end stuff as Hungary’s attacking midfielder Akos Elek hit the woodwork on 64 minutes as it stayed 3-3 at the final whistle.Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2 3 Euro 2016Portugal 3 Hungary 3Iceland 2 Austria 1Belgium 1 Sweden 0Rep. Portugal squeezed through as one of the best third-place finishers but now face a tough match against Croatia. Republic of Ireland scored their own memorable 1-0 win over Italy and Belgium beat Sweden by the same score to both move into the last 16, ending the international career of Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic in defeat. The Real Madrid ace became the first player to score at four European championship finals and his 17th match in a Euro tournament was also a record. It was his 128th appearance for Portugal, further extending the record he set last Saturday, as he made a record 17th appearance at Euro finals.Following their draws with Iceland and Austria, Portugal’s captain had been feeling the pressure. He threw a TV reporter’s microphone in a lake on the morning of the game in Lyon. But he delivered when it mattered as Portugal equalised three times in a topsy-turvy match — not one for the faint-hearted.Hungary captain Balazs Dzsudzsak matched Ronaldo by netting two second-half goals as the Mighty Magyars took first place in Group F winners. With three draws, Portugal advance as third behind Iceland.Hungary took the lead in sweltering conditions at the Stade de Lyon when veteran midfielder Zoltan Gera unleashed a thunderbolt. There was nothing on when Portugal fail to clear a corner. But the 37-year-old Gera belted a low left-footed drive into the bottom-right corner which gave Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio no chance on 19 minutes.last_img read more

Good Samaritans lauded following Range Rover sinking

first_imgAdditionally, someone who hasn’t been identified also helped out. “Another unidentified male entered the water from the shoreline to assist the distressed family,” he wrote. “While we do not know who this person is, we would like [to] identify him to recognize his effort also.” A replacement warning sign reading “Unauthorized Motor Vehicles Prohibited Beyond This Point” has been affixed to a post at the intersection of North Road and Boathouse Road by the Galley, according to Klaren and town administrator Tim Carroll. The sign guards the entrance to Boathouse Road, which leads to the drive-on dock and West Dock. Klaren said it seems to have vanished over the winter, and was found missing in May.  Two such signs were ordered, Klaren said, and Chilmark Police had the highway department install one in its former spot on August 5. It’s unclear if the other sign has been put up yet. The sign by the Galley was absent when Robert Drew of Andover drove past with his family on the evening of July 28, and soon after plunged into the channel. It’s unclear if the lack of a sign played any role in the accident. Other signs, such as one posted at the beginning of the drive-on dock that warns the area is permit parking only, remained in place at the time of Drew’s accident. Klaren described the area around the Galley and Boathouse Road as an ongoing challenge for vehicles and pedestrians to navigate, given the limited space to maneuver. Drew was given a written warning for failure to use care when stopping, backing, or turning, a finalized police report shows. Information previously released by Chilmark Police stated Drew was cited, but didn’t indicate the citation was a warning. Drew told police trouble with the Range Rover’s dial shifter seems to have triggered the plunge. A two-person dive team aided and a piece of excavation equipment worked to salvage the submerged Range Rover on July 29. The Range Rover was ultimately hoisted onto Boathouse Road. “Once on dry land, an inspection of the vehicle showed that the transmission dial appeared to have been turned all the way to the left, beyond designated ‘slot’ for the ‘park’ option,” a finalized report states. “Robert Drew stated he thinks when the vehicle wasn’t going backward like he thought it should be, he turned the dial all the way counterclockwise past the ‘park’ slot. He thinks he turned it so hard the dial went past where it should have. Drew thinks the car was in drive, but at the time thought it was in reverse. When the car rolled forward he gave it more gas, thinking it would send the car backward but instead sent it through the railing of the fence. The steering wheel was bent forward toward the dashboard. Drew stated that he remembers locking out his arms, bracing for when the vehicle went nose-down into the water.” In a letter to Chilmark selectmen, Chilmark Police Chief Jonathan Klaren praised the efforts of two good Samaritans to aid three people who toppled from the Menemsha drive-on dock into the Menemsha Channel inside a Range Rover. “As you are aware, a vehicle unintentionally drove off the filled dock last Tuesday evening [July 28]. I am pleased to report that all of the occupants were able to escape from the sinking vehicle and made their way safely to shore,” Klaren wrote. “While escaping from a submerging vehicle was a daunting task for this family, they were not entirely out of danger. The outgoing tide was running strong, and there are not many options for coming ashore safely along that section of the channel.”Klaren went on to write, “I would like to recognize the efforts of Solon Oliver and Heidi Blau. Solon had been tubing in his boat nearby with Mrs. Blau and her children, just prior to the accident. Unsolicited, they made their way over to the submerging vehicle, and were able to assist the family safely to shore from the outgoing tide of Menemsha Creek. There is no doubt that the efforts of Solon and Heidi enabled this family to walk away physically unscathed.”last_img read more
