Fabian Delph 1 Fabian Delph is hoping to return to action for Manchester City after the current international break. The England midfielder has missed the last nine matches with an Achilles injury but is now nearing the end of his recovery. The 26-year-old told City TV: “It was a bit of a tricky injury, this one. It was an Achilles problem but I’m nearly there now and should start training with the team in the next few days.“I’m really excited to be getting back out on the pitch again and I’m hoping to be available for the next game.City return to domestic action with Premier League trip to Bournemouth on April 2 before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final four days later.News of Delph’s recovery, soon after another positive update on Kevin De Bruyne’s knee problem, will lift City after a difficult past week.Last Sunday’s derby defeat to Manchester United has dragged City into a battle for fourth place in the Premier League while Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart and Raheem Sterling have all joined the injury list.Delph has endured a difficult first season at the Etihad Stadium since moving from Aston Villa last summer, with spells out for hamstring injuries earlier in the campaign. He said: “Apart from my injuries, it’s been a fantastic first year at City. The boys have welcomed me, the fans have been great with me and hopefully I can get fully fit, put all the injuries behind me and get going again.”
1 Toni Kroos in action for Germany Manchester United target Toni Kroos would have no problem adapting to the demands of the Premier League, according to his brother Felix.Kroos is being heavily linked with a big-money switch to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in the summer to join up with Germany team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. However, it is understood that Kroos remains happy at the Bernabeu, where he is still considered a crucial member of the squad and the Spanish giants are eager to keep hold of the 26-year-old.“There is always a lot of talk around England and Spain. You should only believe it when it is certain,” said his younger sibling Felix, who is currently on loan at Union Berlin from Werder Bremen.“But I don’t think England would be a problem for Toni. The only adjustment would be missing Christmas.“If you are able to play a great ball, you’ll fit in anywhere.”
Sergio Aguero is the first South American to score 100 goals in Premier League history Newcastle missed the chance to close the gap on their relegation rivals as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at St James’ Park.Sergio Aguero netted his 100th Premier League goal when he opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour with a dubious header, which appeared to be offside. The prolific Aguero took his goal tally in England’s top flight to 99 with a hat-trick in Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 win at Chelsea and the Argentinian’s goals have come in just an incredible 147 appearances.Vurnon Anita deservedly drew Rafa Benitez’s side level shortly after the half hour with his first goal at St James’ Park, a well taken effort inside the box.Georginio Wijnaldum could have won it late on as Joe Hart – celebrating his 29th birthday – made a stunning save to earn City the point. The solitary point means Benitez’s side have four points from the last two games, having beaten Swansea at the weekend. City, meanwhile, failed to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish, but they remain four points clear of local rivals Manchester United, who are placed in fifth.Newcastle fans showed their appreciation for a convincing performance as their men have a glimmer of hope of survival with four games remaining – they face Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Tottenham. 2 2 After a scrappy start to the clash on Tyneside, Aguero made it a century of goals after 14 minutes when he guided Aleksandar Kolarov’s set piece past Karl Darlow. The Argentinian was fortunate not to have his goal chalked off by referee Kevin Friend, as he was in an offside position before the free-kick was taken. But he took it well, meeting the ball – from the left-hand side – at the front post, flicking it into the centre of the goal.Moussa Sissoko should have put the home side level 15 minutes later when the Frenchman burst through on goal. In a one-on-one situation, Sissoko opened up his body to convert past Hart, but the England goalkeeper read his opponent well to make the save.Sissoko will have been relieved two minutes later as Benitez’s side made it 1-1. Anita, playing at right-back, was found in acres of space on the right flank and he turned inside Paul Dummett before striking across goal to reward United for their efforts in the first half.Aguero should have doubled his tally four minutes into the second half as he turned his man in the box, but he was slow pulling the trigger and he soon went to ground in desperation after losing the ball.It took a brave header from Pablo Zabaleta to deny substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic as he tried to get on the end of Townsend’s cross after Cheick Tiote and Sissoko launched a lightning break on the hour, but Darlow needed two attempts to collect Aguero’s snapshot as City hit back three minutes later. As the game headed for the closing stages, Wijnaldum got himself into a great position to win it for Newcastle. On the right of the box, the Dutchman showed great feet to offset his man before firing towards goal, but Hart got a hand to the ball, Wijnaldum firing the rebound into the side netting.
10 Midfield: Aaron Ramsey (Wales) – Ramsey looks unrecognisable to the player who Arsenal have been fielding all last season and has been one of the players of the tournament. He was everywhere against Belgium and came out with two assists to take his total to four during the Championships no one else has more. Defender: Pepe (Portugal) – Once he cuts out all the play-acting and histrionics, Pepe is actually a world-class defender and he showed it during the game against Poland. The Real Madrid man made some vital interceptions and headers as the game ebbed towards penalties. 10 Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer (Germany) – click the arrow, right, to see talkSPORT’s team of the quarter-finals – Neuer made a few good stops to keep out the Italians and was the hero of the penalty shootout, saving Matteo Darmians spot kick to ensure Germany progressed to the last four. 10 Forward: Antoine Griezmann (France) – Griezmanns goal against Iceland saw him become the tournaments top scorer with four. His effort just before half time was a brilliantly timed run and an even better finish as he dinked the ball over the on-rushing Hannes Halldorsson. 10 10 10 Forward: Hal Robson-Kanu (Wales) – The offers will surely be flooding in for the man without a club. He was a nightmare for Jordan Lukaku and Jason Denayer to deal with and scored one of the goals of the tournament so far with his amazing Cruyff-turn to avoid three players before calmly slotting home. Defender: Ashley Williams (Wales) – This was Williams best performance of the Euros so far as he kept the Welsh defence organised and defiant under some intense scrutiny from the Belgian attack. Also scored the equaliser with a thumping header. The semi-final line up of Euro 2016 is now complete with the dreams of four more countries coming to an end.Wales shocked Belgium with a magnificent 3-1 win while Iceland’s fairytale came to a crushing end with France romping to a 5-2.The other two went to penalty shootouts as Italy and Poland were dumped out of the tournament at the hands of Germany and Portugal respectively.Wales now face Portugal, with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo coming face to face, while hosts France will be confronted with their biggest test so far as Germany stand in their way of the final. But who stood out during the quarter-final stage? Click the arrow above, right, to see talkSPORT’s team of the last eight in a 4-3-3 formation. 10 Midfield: Renato Sanches (Portugal) – Manchester United fans must be ruing not signing Sanches from Benfica after his all-action display against Poland. The 18-year-old scored in normal time and also converted his spot kick as he controlled the Portugal midfield. 10 Defender: Chris Gunter (Wales) – Gunter worked tirelessly throughout Wales incredible 3-1 win over Belgium, keeping Eden Hazard quiet for 90 minutes. The Reading full back also sent in the cross for Sam Vokes late goal. Defender: Kamil Glik (Poland) – Glik was on top form for Poland and managed to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at bay for the whole 120 minutes before scoring brilliantly from the penalty spot during the shootout. 10 10 Forward: Olivier Giroud (France) – Giroud put in a magnificent man of the match performance against Iceland, scoring twice and assisting another. His physicality was a constant source of trouble for Iceland as France hammered five past them.
One of the crowd favorites was Casey Pernsteiner, 14, who traveled to the event from her hometown of Gonzales, Texas, with her mother. Pernsteiner logged a 21.59 second average in the preliminary round to move on to the finals. The crowd erupted with applause as she threw the cube down time after time, slapping an electronic timing mat and consistently clocking times well under 30 seconds. “My previous best time in competition was 25 (seconds) and I beat that, like, all ten solves, so I was really happy with that,” Pernsteiner said. She finished among the top 16 finalists. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! SAN FRANCISCO – A 20-year-old California Institute of Technology student set a new world’s record Saturday for solving the popular Rubik’s Cube puzzle, turning the tiled brain-twister from scrambled to solved in 11.13 seconds. Leyan Lo is part of Caltech’s Rubik’s Cube Club, a brainy clutch of students that hosted the competition at the Exploratorium museum in San Francisco. Lo’s record-setting time came early in the day, among his first five tries in the preliminary rounds. The record-setting solve caught competitors and Lo himself by surprise. “It’s kind of scary now that I set it, because I have two more (attempts) to go,” Lo said humbly afterward. His time of 11.13 seconds broke the previous record of 11.75 seconds, set by Frenchman Jean Pons at the Dutch Open competition last year. For that title, Lo went up against the teenager widely considered the fastest Rubik’s Cube solver on the planet – Shotaro “Macky” Makisumi, a 15-year-old high school sophomore from Pasadena. Makisumi prevailed, clocking in with an average time of 14.91 seconds in the final round to take first place. Besides blindingly fast fingers and a head for memorizing algorithms used by most top competitors to solve the cube, what is Makisumi’s secret? “I don’t know. Faster first two layers,” he surmised, referring to solving the first two layers of the cube’s colored tiles before moving on to the last. For his victory, Makisumi won a Rubik’s Snake puzzle, one of several variations on the basic cube model which has sold more than 100 million worldwide, according to the manufacturer. Contestants brought their own cubes to the competition, and a computer program was used to scramble the cubes in the same fashion for each round to give the contestants equal footing.
